Question:

I worked, self taught for several years on excel, this has confused me now.

Answer:

Go to the menu:

Tools--> Options and select the [design] tab. Verify that "Auto" is selected.

Which could even clearly up to the 2nd part of the problem. Not sure. Let us know.

Assuming that you find that the calculation has been set to manual, you can ask "how". It is possible that you have opened another workbook as the first workbook after the opening of Excel was set to manual calculation, and then in the same session with Excel, later you opened the workbook. Which would have caused change in the setting from automatic to manual. Excel sets the calculation mode for a session based on the parameter in the first workbook that you open Excel from any time, and then all other opened this session in the same way.
